Silicone Rubber Sealants
The primary application of CAB-O-SIL LM-150 is in RTV-1 and RTV-2 silicone rubber sealants.
Among untreated compressed fumed silicas, LM-150 offers the best balance between dispersibility, thixotropy, and reinforcing properties. While fumed silicas with higher surface areas can provide better thixotropy and reinforcing properties, they fail to achieve sufficient dispersion when using the low-shear mixing equipment widely employed in the sealant industry.
Silicone Rubber
CAB-O-SIL LM-150 can be used for the reinforcement of HTV/HCR. Although it only moderately increases hardness, tensile strength, and elongation, it is the easiest untreated fumed silica to disperse.
Because untreated fumed silica has a hydrophilic surface, surface modification of the silica is necessary to prevent gum.
